Grade
Level: Elementary, 6 - 8
|
Description:
|
Activities
and lessons in this trunk engage students to learn and understand
concepts of energy relating to magnets and electricity. Students
will learn to formulate ideas and apply inquiry and problem-solving
skills to justify ideas to make informed decisions. An emphasis
is placed on communication and development of strategies and
solutions. |
Designer:
Melanie Greaves (Fort Fairfield Junior High School) |
History:
Designed originally in 1998 using grant money from Maine Math
and Science Alliance, copied for the Library in 2000 using an
Eisenhower grant. |

Educational
Content
|
The Electricity and Magnetism
trunk was designed using the following guidelines established
by the Maine State Learning Results |
Science and Technology 5-8
|
|
H. ENERGY
|
|
H2. Demonstrate that energy cannot be created or destroyed,
but only change from one form to another.
H4. Describe the characteristics of static and current electricity
|
|
J. INQUIRY and PROBLEM SOLVING
|
|
J1. Make accurate observations using appropriate tools and
units of measure.
J2. Design and conduct scientific investigations that included
controlled experiments and systematic observations: make observations,
collect and analyze data, and do experiments.
J3. Verify and evaluate scientific investigations and use the
results in a purposeful way.
|
|
L. COMMUNICATION
|
|
L2. Defend problem-solving strategies and solutions.
L3. Evaluate individual and group communication for clarity,
and work to improve communication.
|
|
M. IMPLICATIONS of SCIENCE and TECHNOLOGY
|
|
M1. Research and evaluate social and environmental impacts
of scientific and technological developments.
M2. Describe the historical and cultural conditions at the time
of an invention or discovery, and analyze the societal impacts
of that invention.
M7. Explain the connections between industry, natural resources,
populations, and economic development.
