Chesuncook Soil Profile |
Soils occur at the boundary between the earth's atmosphere and bedrock. A soil profile is a vertical slice into the earth that shows the various soil horizons. The surface horizons contain more organic matter while the deeper levels have a larger component from the bedrock. The museum has a profile from the Chesuncook Soil, which is widespread throughout northern Maine and is an important of the area's farm lands and forests horizons that make up this soil are described. A map and photograph show the distribution and topography associated with this important soil. Nearby displays show how soil and grain size are determined.
