Musical
Groups
Musical groups have existed on campus almost since the very beginning when the school opened as Aroostook State Normal School. During one period of time, when Mr. Jan Kok was a faculty member, many various musical groups began on campus. His inspiration helped to get many students involved in singing especially, but also in the general appreciation of music. Following is a list of musical groups that have been a part of student life at this school.
Orchestra - Organized in 1928.

Music Council - Organized in 1941.
Chante Club - The Chante Club began when the school reopened after being closed down as a result of World War II. It was organized to provide students the opportunity to sing with others in an organized fashion. "Chante" comes from the French verb "chanter," which means "to sing."
Men's Chorus
Mixed Chorus - The Mixed Chorus began in 1954 under the direction of Mr. Jan Kok, a music teacher who had been hired by ASNS. The Mixed Chorus consisted of both male and female singers.
Hilltop Carolers - The
Hilltop Carolers, another singing group, was organized in
1956, again under the direction of Mr. Jan Kok. The
Hilltop Carolers consisted of mostly female members, but
interested male students were also welcome and encouraged
to be a member of this group. The Hilltop Carolers earned
quite a good reputation in town, as they performed at
various town events and held Carol Sings on campus.
Music Organizations Association (MOA) - The MOA was organized in 1961 as a unity of the Hilltop Carolers, the Women's Chorus, and the Listening Club.
The Listening Club - The Listening Club began in 1961 for those students who enjoyed listening to master-made music, rather than making or reproducing music themselves.
Instrumental Ensemble - Organized in 1974.
U.M.P.I. Band - The U.M.P.I. Band was established in the fall semester of 1997, and although it has a small number of participants, it is hoped that the band will grow in popularity. The U.M.P.I. Band performed at several functions throughout the year, including during some basketball games, during a special Holiday dinner, as well as during their own U.M.P.I. Band Concert in the spring.
