Physical
Education, Health, and Recreation Groups
Issues about Physical Education, Health, and Recreation have been important components of life on this campus since its conception. Social activities in the beginning of ASNS included picnics, canoe trips, and hiking trips, all recreational types of activities. While these were not organized groups, sometimes organized groups came about as a result of some of these activities, as well as from the growing interest of students to learn more about such topics, or to actively participate in recreational or physical activities. The following page shows the development and expansion of P.E., Health, and Recreation groups.
ASNS Katahdin Club - The Katahdin Club was established in 1938 as a result of some student hikers who climbed Mt. Katahdin. It was their hope to be able to return to Mt. Katahdin to experience the climb often and to get other students involved as well. Unfortunately, the ASNS Katahdin Club was short-lived, as there was no evidence of its continuation in subsequent publications of the Salmagundi.
The Outing Club - The Outing Club was established in 1941. It was stated that, "the purpose of this club is to provide wholesome oganized fun through athletics," (Salmagundi, 1941). Although the Outing Club did not always stand on firm ground, it was re-established in 1947 when there was interest again.
The Health Council - The Health Council was organized in 1951 with the purpose of promoting "a sound student health program," (Salmagundi, 1951).
Joint Athletic Council - The Joint Athletic Council emerged in 1951. The Joint Athletic Council was a joint effort of representatives of men's and women's athletics with the goal of coordinating the sports program.
Tumbling Club - 1953 was the beginning of the Tumbling Club, a club that placed emphasis on learning personal body movements and body movements in cooperation with other people. Learned and practice activities included headstand, thigh stands, flips, and pyramids.
Physical Education Majors Club - The Physical Education Majors Club began in 1959, just after the beginning of the Physical Education Major at this institution. This club still exists on campus to this day, with major emphasis placed on the further education of Physical Education issues and on attending conferences to learn about such issues.
The Officiating Club - The Officiating Club began in 1961 out of the interest of students to learn about how to officiate individual and team sports that were a part of their school.
Ice Hockey Club - The Ice Hockey Club emerged in 1979. At that time the Ice Hockey Club chose the team name the "UMPI Snow Coyotes." The purpose of the Ice Hockey Club was for interested students to competitively play ice hockey. The Ice Hockey Club still exists on campus today.
Indoor Soccer Club - The Indoor Soccer Club also began in 1979 and continues today for those students interested in playing indoor soccer competitively.
Recreation Club - The Recreation Club was established in 1987. Since then, it has emerged into what is now called the Parks and Recreation Club.
Peer Health Facilitators - 1992 marked the start of the Peer Health Facilitators, a group that is now called the Peer Health Educators.
Outdoor Adventure Program International (OAPI) - OAPI emerged in 1994 and still continues today. Its purpose is to allow students the opportunity to participate in outdoor adventure activities such as skiing, canoeing, rafting, and hiking.
