Residential
Life Groups
There have been a small variety of different groups on campus
that deal with issues about residential life. Following are those
groups and the functions that they have served.
- Girls' Council - The Girls' Council
began in February of 1935. The purpose of this council of
girls from the dormitories was to establish rules that
the girls needed to follow, then to enforce those rules
and make sure that they were followed by fellow
residents. The Girls' Council was later renamed the
Women's House Government.
- Boys' Council - Also established in
1935, the Boys' Council was a group of male residents
that set and enforced rules that were deemed necessary
for all to follow in order to establish and maintain a
high quality for residential life students. The Boys'
Council was later renamed the Men's House Government.
- Resident Assistants - The emergence of
Resident Assistants (RA's) was first seen in 1975. A
Resident Assistant is a student who resides in the
dormitory and who is there to enforce the rules that
residents must follow. The establishment of RA's was
necessary, and was a good step toward governing the
behavior of students that reside in the dormitories. The
position of Resident Assistant continues to this day.
- Resident Director - A Resident Director
(RD) is one who oversees the work of the Resident
Assistants (RA's) in the residence halls. The purpose of
the RD is to make sure that the Resident Assistants are
doing their jobs. In addition, the RD aides the RA's in
situations where further assistance is required. The
position of RD also came along in 1975 when RA's were
established, and the position still remains today.
- Interdorm Disciplinary Committee - The
Interdorm Disciplinary Committee was established in 1975,
with the purpose of providing sanctions to residential
students who had broken the established dormitory rules.
This committe has been renamed into what exists now, the
Conduct Code Committee. The difference between the
Interdorm Disciplinary Committee and the Conduct Code
Committee is that the Conduct Code not only deals with
residential life rule violations, but also with other
violations of the rules of the University.
- Residence Hall Association - The
Residence Hall Association (RHA) is a group that focuses
on issues related to residential life. The RHA also
sponsors some various student activities throughout the
school year.
